Balcony solar panels need very little cleaning. The UK averages 159 days of rain a year, and a railing-mounted panel sits close to vertical, so water sheets off it and carries loose dirt away. Clean only when something opaque sticks to the glass: bird mess, pollen film or algae.
That’s the honest answer, and it’s shorter than most of what’s written on this subject. Nearly every solar panel cleaning guide online was built for a roof array of ten or twelve solar modules pitched at 30 or 40 degrees, where dust and dirt have somewhere to settle and you can’t reach the surface of the panels without scaffolding. A balcony kit is one or two panels hanging near-vertically on a railing you can touch from your own floor. Both the problem and the risk are different.
From 27 August 2026 compliant plug-in devices can legally be sold and used in Great Britain, so a lot of people are about to own one for the first time. Worth knowing before you buy a bucket: what actually changes on that date says nothing about solar panel maintenance, because the specification leaves the schedule to whoever makes your kit.
The short version
Look at the panels once a month from where you already stand. Clean twice a year at most, and only if you can see something on the glass. Plain water, a soft brush, both feet on the balcony floor. No pressure washer, no chemicals, no leaning over the railing.
Do Balcony Solar Panels Actually Need Cleaning?
Mostly, no. Two things do the work for you.
The first is British weather. Met Office areal series for the UK, averaged over 1991 to 2020, give 159 days a year with at least 1 mm of rain and 1,163 mm of rainfall in total. That’s a rinse cycle running roughly every other day, spread across all twelve months.
The second is geometry. A roof-pitched solar PV module at 30 degrees holds a shallow film of water that dries in place and leaves the dust behind. A panel clamped to a balcony railing sits far closer to vertical, so rain runs off fast and takes loose material with it. It’s the same reason your windows stay cleaner than your windowsills.
What rain won’t shift is anything sticky or bonded: bird droppings, tree sap if you’re near trees, a pollen film that has dried into a crust, and the green algae or lichen that creeps in from the frame edge on a shaded north-facing balcony. Diesel soot on a busy road can bind into a haze that rain alone leaves behind.
Be realistic about the prize. A light film costs you a small percentage of energy production, and on an 800 VA kit that’s pennies a week. Regular cleaning on a fixed calendar isn’t worth your Saturday.
How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels in the UK?
Once a month, glance at the panels from wherever you normally stand. That’s the whole inspection routine. If the glass looks clear, walk away.
For an actual clean, twice a year is the usual recommendation. Anker SOLIX tells its own balcony power plant customers to inspect and potentially clean at least that often, adjusting for local conditions and watching output for an unexplained drop. EcoFlow puts it lower again, saying once a year suits most UK homes and reserving two cleans for properties near farmland or heavy traffic. More frequent cleaning than that is effort you won’t see on the bill.
If you want one sensible window, late spring is it. Working from the same Met Office monthly means, April, May and June are the three months of the year with the fewest rain days, at 11.6, 11.2 and 11.5 respectively, against 15.8 in November. They also sit inside the tree pollen season, which the Met Office puts at late March to mid-May, and the grass season from mid-May to July. Least rain, most pollen, and the longest days of the year for generating. That’s the one stretch where a film can build up and cost you something measurable.

The Best Way to Clean Solar Panels on a Balcony
Never clean a panel that’s been in the sun all afternoon. Cold water on hot glass is a risk you have no reason to take, and sun dries water before you can wipe it, leaving a streak worse than the dirt was. Clean your solar panels early morning or late afternoon, or on an overcast day.
- Unplug the device at the socket. A plug-in kit isolates completely at its BS 1363 plug, which is one thing it makes easier than a hard-wired rooftop system. If you’re going near the DC connectors, the specification requires manufacturers to tell you the AC supply must be off before those are disconnected. - Rinse with plain water first. Most of what’s on the glass comes off with nothing else.
- Soften anything stuck by letting water sit on it for a few minutes before you touch it.
- Gently scrub the panels with a soft brush or a non-abrasive sponge, top to bottom, following the direction water runs. Use a brush to reach the top edge if it’s above shoulder height.
- Add a drop of washing-up liquid only for a spot that water won’t lift, then thoroughly rinse the panels. Residue attracts dirt.
- Let it air dry, or blot with a clean microfibre cloth if your water is hard enough to leave water spots or streaks.
Keep these away from the glass: abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, steel wool, harsh chemicals and solvents, anything gritty that risks scratching the panels, metal scrapers, and high-pressure water jets. Anker SOLIX and EcoFlow both rule out pressure washers and abrasives in their own published guidance, and both say to switch the kit off before you go near it with a brush.
The pressure washer deserves its own paragraph, because EcoFlow’s stated reason is the right one: a jet will "mess up the seals and wiring". The interim specification requires outdoor components of a plug-in device, including any outdoor plug and socket-outlet, to reach at least IP55 under BS EN 60529. That’s a rating tested for weather exposure. It’s no promise at all about a jet driven into a module edge seal or a cable gland at pressures the rating was never tested against, and a seal you’ve quietly broken won’t tell you it’s broken.
If you can’t reach it standing normally, stop
Nothing on the front of a solar panel is worth a fall. If the glass is out of reach with both feet flat on the floor and an extension pole in your hand, the correct answer is to leave it dirty or pay somebody. It is never to climb on the furniture, and it is never to lean out over the railing.
Bird Droppings Are the One Thing That Matters
Droppings are the deposit most worth going outside for. They’re opaque, they stick, they survive light rain, and they set hard in sun.
The reason a small patch matters more than its size suggests is how a PV module is wired. Cells sit in series, so a cell that’s substantially covered limits the current its whole string can carry, and the module gives up more than the shaded fraction. Bypass diodes exist to stop that becoming a hot spot, but they work by routing around the affected section, which still costs you the output.
Soften it with water and let it lift. Don’t attack it dry, and don’t reach for a blade. Guano dries harder than it looks and a scratched panel is permanent.
On deterrents, one rule catches people out. Under section 1(1) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it’s an offence to intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built. Pigeons finding the warm, sheltered gap behind a balcony panel is entirely predictable, and once something has nested there you leave it alone until it’s out of use. Fit spikes or mesh before the season, not during it.
Keep that gap clear for a second reason. Manufacturers have to specify a minimum clearance between the module and the mounting surface for ventilation, and a nest or a wad of packed leaves defeats it. Our guide to mounting balcony solar panels covers the clearances.
Working Safely at a Balcony Edge
This is the part the rooftop articles can’t help you with, and the part worth taking seriously.
Approved Document K sets guarding for external balconies in dwellings at a minimum of 1,100 mm, and requires it to resist the loads in BS EN 1991-1-1. That railing is designed to stop you going over it. Nothing in that specification contemplates you putting your weight across the top of it while holding a wet brush.
So the working rule is simple. Clean from inside the railing, both feet on the floor, and reach the rest with a pole. If the outward face of the panel can only be reached by leaning out, it doesn’t get cleaned by you.
A few things follow from being above other people:
- Check what’s underneath before you start. A pavement, a car park, a play area, or your neighbour’s balcony. Dropped cleaning equipment travels a long way.
- Use a bucket rather than a hose held over the edge, and keep the volume of water low. It has to go somewhere.
- Water runs onto the balcony below. Warn them, or pick a time they’re not out. Many leases carry a covenant about nuisance to other occupiers, which our leasehold balcony solar guide goes into.
- Never stand on a chair, a planter, a storage box or the railing itself. The balcony floor is the surface out there designed to carry you.
On the law: HSE’s own guidance says the Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply "if you are an employer or you control work at height". Cleaning your own balcony as a householder isn’t work, so the Regulations don’t bind you. They do bind anybody you pay. A window cleaner at a balcony edge is working at height, and their employer carries a real duty for how that job is planned.
The Checks That Aren’t Cleaning
Keeping your solar panels clean matters less than the checks below. These are what keep your solar generating.
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule over anything online, including this page. Section 8.3.2 of the interim specification requires documentation supplied with a compliant device to include "Recommended intervals and procedures for inspection and maintenance, including visual checks of fixings, cables and connectors" and "Instructions for safe cleaning where applicable". Those instructions will be specific to your kit. There’s a catch for now: as at 11 August 2026 no device had been assessed compliant on the ENA register, so nobody in the UK can hand you that document yet. Test your RCBO. Section 8.3.4 of the specification notes that older RCBO circuit protection "can be desensitised by products that leak DC current into the AC circuit", plug-in solar systems among them, and says consumers should be instructed to press the test button on the RCBO periodically while the device is generating. If it doesn’t trip immediately, the specification’s own instruction is to call a professional electrician about replacing it. It’s a two-second job, and more use than any amount of polishing.
Check the fixings after every storm. The specification bans mounting arrangements relying solely on cable ties, rope, string, adhesive tape, bungee cords or straps, so a compliant kit uses proper clamps. Clamps still work loose through thermal cycling. Check them by hand, seasonally and after high winds.
Look at the cables, connectors and the inverter. UV damage, chafe where a lead crosses a door threshold, water sitting in an unseated connector, protective caps left off. Solar inverters carry their own service life, separate from the panels, and a microinverter’s published lifespan is what usually sets when a PV system needs money spending on it. Watch the app. A trend in generation data finds a fault long before your eyes will, and it separates dirty PV panels from a hardware problem. An unexplained step change in output is a fault, not dirt.
Is Professional Solar Panel Cleaning Worth It?
Professional cleaning is a real trade, and it exists because roof arrays are genuinely dangerous to reach. A cleaning service is priced around access equipment, water-fed poles and insurance, so the cost to clean a roof array reflects half a day’s work. For two panels on a railing you can touch from your own floor, the sums rarely work out, and DIY cleaning is the right answer for almost every balcony kit.
Pay when the panels genuinely can’t be reached from inside the railing, when a managing agent has told you not to work at the edge, or when there’s a physical reason you shouldn’t. If you do hire someone, ask whether they’ve cleaned balcony installations rather than roofs, and ask to see their public liability cover.
