In short

An “800W” plug-in kit is one that feeds up to 800 W into your home, the most the UK rules allow. 73 verified kits are registered at that limit, and we've found 25 on sale, the cheapest at £336. Buy the kit as verified: a bare 800 W microinverter with panels of your choosing isn't covered.

What “800W” means on a plug-in kit

The number is the inverter's output, not the panels. Since 27 August 2026, a verified kit may feed at most 800 VA and 3.5 A into a socket. SI 2026 No. 848 words it as 800 watts; the specification says volt-amperes, and our 800 VA vs 800 W guide explains the difference. The panels behind the inverter can add up to more, up to 2,000 W across no more than 4 panels, and the inverter caps what reaches the socket. That's why kits sold as “800W” often carry 900 W to 1,200 W of panels: the extra panel power helps on dull days and in the mornings and evenings, when the panels make well under their rating.

Above 960 W of panels, the specification makes the maker advise you to consider having your wiring checked by a professional. What 800 W will actually run in your home, month by month, is in our guide to what an 800W kit can run.

The microinverters inside verified kits

The microinverter is the part that makes a kit “800W”, and it's the safety-critical one. Of the 73 verified 800 W kits, 33 name their inverter in the register record:

  • Hoymiles HF-800-WB: 10 verified kits
  • Hoymiles HMS-800-2WB: 8 verified kits
  • Zendure SolarFlow 800: 6 verified kits
  • VaySunic VM800WE-P2: 5 verified kits
  • EcoFlow EF-PS-800: 2 verified kits
  • MX800lite: 1 verified kit
  • Octopus M1-800-E: 1 verified kit

The rest don't name the inverter in the record, so check the listing or the box. What matters under the rules is the kit as a whole: the register assesses the product as submitted, and a microinverter sold on its own isn't covered even when the same model is inside a verified kit. The bare Hoymiles microinverters that were submitted by themselves were not verified. Our reviews of the HF-800-WB, the Hoymiles HMS-800W-2T and EcoFlow's STREAM microinverter cover the hardware.

Verified kits below 800W

11 verified kits are registered below 800 W, mostly single-panel or 500 VA designs: Solarfy Solo 455 (registered at 455 W); Modular Solar 475W unit, 400W inverter (registered at 400 W); Modular Solar 340W unit, 400W inverter (registered at 340 W); Perlight PowerPlug 500 (registered at 500 W); Perlight PowerPlug FLEX 465 (registered at 500 W); Perlight PowerPlug FLEX 500 (registered at 500 W); Perlight PowerPlug 465 (registered at 500 W); APsystems Premium Set, one panel, 510W (registered at 500 W); APsystems Premium Set, two panels, 1020W (registered at 799 W); Modular Solar 475W unit (registered at 475 W); Modular Solar 340W unit (registered at 340 W). A smaller inverter suits a home whose daytime use is low, since output beyond what the house is drawing goes to the grid unpaid. Our savings guide explains why that matters.

Before you buy an 800W kit

  • Match the model on the listing to a verified register record, reference and all. Our guide on how to tell whether a kit is legal shows how.
  • Plug it straight into a wall socket on a socket circuit. No extension leads or adaptors.
  • One kit per household for now, and a G98 notification to your network operator after you switch it on.
  • Not on wood: the specification bars timber cladding and timber balconies, and in England the planning rules take plug-in solar on a wooden wall, balcony or fence out of permitted development. See planning permission.

Frequently asked questions

What is an 800W plug-in solar kit?

A plug-in solar kit whose inverter feeds up to 800 W into your home through a normal socket, the most the UK rules allow. The specification sets the limit at 800 VA and 3.5 A; the panels can add up to more, to a maximum of 2,000 W, and the inverter caps what reaches the socket.

Which 800W plug-in solar kits are legal in the UK?

Only kits verified on the ENA Type Test Register. At our 30 September 2026 check, 73 of the 84 verified kits were registered at 800 W, and we'd found 25 of them on sale, from £336. The full list is on this page and on our certification tracker.

Can I buy an 800W microinverter on its own and add my own panels?

Not under the plug-in route. The ENA register assesses the kit as submitted, panels and inverter together, and the bare Hoymiles microinverters submitted on their own were not verified. A kit that uses a Hoymiles HF-800-WB, for example, is verified as that kit, not the inverter alone.

Is a kit with more than 800W of panels allowed?

Yes, as long as the kit itself is verified. The output to the socket stays capped at 800 VA, and total panel power can go up to 2,000 W. Above 960 W of panels, the maker must advise you to consider a professional check of your wiring.

How many 800W kits can I plug in?

One per household for now. The specification allows one per circuit, but Engineering Recommendation G98 Issue 2 Amendment 1 2026 limits it to 1 per household until it's amended.
