Can the HF-800-WB use the plug-in route?

InstaGroup Ltd is a Berkshire-based insulation and retrofit business, incorporated in 1980, working across cavity wall and external wall insulation, PAS 2035 delivery and installer network management. It sells energy products under its InstaGen brand.
It also, contrary to what you might expect from a company with that history, has a plug-in solar product. InstaGen Plug-in Solar sits in the main site navigation and has its own product page, published in July 2026.
The kit is three parts: two 435 W bifacial all-black panels, the 800VA microinverter, and a mounting frame with a manually adjustable tilt angle that fixes to railings, walls, balconies or the ground. InstaGroup’s own line is that “two panels connected to one microinverter can generate up to 800W”. Three datasheets are published alongside it — panel, bracket and inverter.
It is marked “Coming Soon” and no price is shown. So there is a documented product here, from the manufacturer of record, with a specification you can read — but not, yet, something you can buy.
The Hoymiles HF-800-WB Connection
InstaGroup documents this itself, which saves a lot of guessing.
Its own microinverter datasheet is headed “Data Sheet HiFlow Series Microinverter”— HiFlow is Hoymiles’ series name — gives the model as HF-800-WB, which is Hoymiles’ model designation, and names Hoymiles directly in the monitoring row: “S-Miles Cloud (Hoymiles Monitoring Platform)”. The spec table reproduces Hoymiles’ published figures value for value.
So the link is not an inference. It is in a first-party document from the manufacturer of record on the register entry.
What is not documented anywhere primary is the commercial shape of the arrangement — whether this is a rebadge, an OEM supply deal, a licence or something else. We are not going to characterise it.
One difference between the two datasheets matters a great deal, and it is covered below: the plug.
Expect the naming to be inconsistent wherever you look. UK listings sell the same designation as the Hoymiles HiFlow 800, as the “Hi Flow Pro”, and as a plug-in solar microinverter Hi Flow — one retailer heads its page “Hoymiles HF-800-WB Plug-In Solar Microinverter Hi Flow Pro”. Check the model string, not the marketing name.
Hoymiles positions the HiFlow range at small PV systems in residential buildings — balconies, patios, gardens — rather than at rooftop arrays. It is a solution designed around one or two panels and a socket, which is precisely the shape the UK rules have been written for.
For range context, Hoymiles builds the same Flex-S3 architecture across a spread of ratings, up to the four-channel HMS-1600-4T and HMS-1800-4T. The 800 VA units are the ones that matter in Britain, because 800 VA is the cap.

Three details worth pulling out of that table.
The built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module remove the separate DTU dongle that older Hoymiles units need. No extra WLAN gateway, no second box on the wall, and easy installation as a result — a real improvement over the arrangement described in our Hoymiles HM-600 review. Built-in WiFi is now the norm across this class.
The single MPPT with one input makes this a one-string product. Module-level tracking across two independent MPP trackers is what you get from the dual-channel units — Hoymiles’ HiFlow Pro 2-in-1 range, whose models it writes as 600-2WB through 1000-2WB, and the HMS series generally. And the 22 V starting voltage matters more in Britain than the headline efficiency does. It means the unit begins generating at low light — early mornings, overcast afternoons — rather than sitting idle. On a UK balcony that is worth more kWh over a year than a fractional gain in peak conversion.
The 3.48 A Margin, the Plug and the AC Cable
Rated output current is 3.48 A. The IPS v2 ceiling is 3.5 A. The 800 VA class is built right against the UK limit, with 0.02 A in hand.
The plug is the more interesting problem, and it has to be checked per SKU rather than assumed across the family. Two datasheets, two different plugs.
Hoymiles’ global datasheet specifies the Flex-S3 plug-and-play cable with a Schukoplug on the CEE7/7 variant — a European fitting. InstaGroup’s UK datasheet for the same model specifies something else entirely: “Plug type — BS 1363-1 plug with BS 1362 5A fuse”, on a 5 m Flex-S3 AC connector cable.
Both are true. They are different cable variants of the same inverter, and the UK one is specified for the UK plug and the correct fuse rating. That is what IPS v2 asks for on both counts.
Two things it does not settle, and they are narrow but real. The specification also requires the plug to have partially insulated pins, which neither datasheet states. And it requires the plug to be factory-fitted, where both datasheets describe a plug-and-play cable — which may or may not amount to the same thing.
Worth adding, because it is a common misreading: the specification prohibits extension leads, multi-way adaptors, RCD adaptors and travel adaptors outright. If you end up with a Schuko unit, an adapter is not a route round that.
UK retail listings for the Hoymiles-branded unit line up with the InstaGroup datasheet rather than the global one. One states the product “does come with a cable with UK 3 pin plug” and refers to a “standard UK 13A plug socket”; another sells it under the title “with UK Plug & Play Cable”.
One further point, and it is the same on both datasheets: the compliance list carries German, European and French grid codes and no UK one. No G98, no G99. Whatever plug is on the end of the cable, that gap is what the register entry exists to close.
What Is Actually on Sale, and What That Does Not Mean
Hoymiles-branded HF-800-WB units are listed by UK retailers now, with UK plug-and-play cabling and balcony PV marketing, at around £119 including VAT — verified 11 August 2026. That sits alongside a register with nothing compliant under its Plug-in Solar type and an SI that is not in force until 27 August 2026.
We are reporting that, not characterising it. A microinverter sold as a component is not self-evidently the same thing as a “plug-in solar device” under the 1994 or 2002 regulations, and we have not established how those regulations bite on a component sale. It is worth noting that at least one of those retailers states on the listing: “UK plug-in solar legislation is not yet fully confirmed. We do not recommend connecting or operating this system until compliant guidance and regulations are established.”
The buyer-facing position is simpler. Do not connect one before a kit is verified on the register.
What an 800 VA Microinverter Is Actually For
Set the paperwork aside for a moment and the product itself is easy to describe.
A single 800W micro inverter, one or two PV modules, a bracket, and a cable to a socket. That is the whole balcony power plant, and it is a photovoltaic system in the same sense a rooftop array is — just very small. It needs no roof, and at around £119 for the inverter it is a genuinely cost-effective solution next to anything requiring an installer.
Reducing daytime electricity draw is the entire mechanism. Generation meets your base load — fridge, router, standby, whatever is running — and you import less. Small plug-in solar systems live or die on that, not on peak output, because solar power you use as it is generated is worth the full unit rate and anything you export without a Smart Export Guarantee tariff is worth nothing.
For a small home or a flat with somewhere south-facing to hang two panels, an 800 VA unit at maximum power will produce a few hundred kWh a year. That is a real dent in a bill. It is not independence, and any listing promising £200 a year from an individual solar panel pair should be read with that in mind.
Where residential PV systems of this size fall down is expectation, not engineering. The hardware is not the limiting factor and never has been.
Treated as what it is — a cheap, portable home solar solution that shaves the daytime baseline — an 800 VA microinverter and two panels is one of the few genuinely sensible energy purchases available to someone who does not own a roof.

Is the InstaGroup HF-800-WB legal to use in the UK?
No device on the plug-in solar register is currently compliant, and INSTA/20951/V1 sits in ENA’s “Further Information Required” band, meaning it cannot be deemed compliant at this stage and will be reviewed again once more documentation is supplied.
