Check any plug-in solar kit against the fourteen rules the UK's Interim Product Specification sets. Every listing claims compliance; this works out whether a kit actually qualifies — and tells you plainly when there isn't enough information to say.
From 27 August 2026, SI 2026 No. 848 makes it legal to sell and use a plug-in solar device in the UK — provided the device meets the Interim Product Specification. That qualifier is doing a great deal of work. The specification sets fourteen separate conditions, and a kit has to satisfy all of them. Miss one and the plug-in route is closed to it.
In practice this is hard to check. Marketplace listings quote panel wattage where the rule is about inverter output, reuse product photos across regional plug variants, and describe a kit as “UK compliant” without saying which standard they mean. This tool walks through the fourteenrules one at a time and gives you a per-rule verdict — pass, fail, or an honest “we can't tell from that”.
One of the fourteen is not pass-or-fail. Above 960 W of panels the specification requires the manufacturer to advise you to consider a professional assessment of your existing wiring. That is advice about your installation, not a condition the product must meet, so the checker reports it as an advisory and it does not count against the verdict. Several of the rules are also about you rather than the kit — which circuit you would use, what you would plug it into, and what you would mount it on.

As at 11 August 2026, no kit was verified on the ENA Type Test Register. The register rule requires a verified listing, so essentially every kit on sale today will come back non-compliant. That is the state of the market, not a bug — we would rather tell you than let you assume the tool is broken.

Leave anything you can't confirm as “I don't know”. An unanswered question is reported as unknown, never as a pass.
The limit is 800 VA. This is the inverter's apparent power output, not the combined wattage of the panels.
The limit is 3.5 A at the point of connection. Look for "max output current" on the inverter data sheet.
The cap is 2,000 W. Add up every panel connected to the microinverter.

We still need the number of PV modules, how many are wired in series and the array's open-circuit voltage (Voc). Voc is on the panel's own data sheet, usually as "open circuit voltage" or "Voc"; for panels wired in series, add the figures together, and for panels wired in parallel take the single-panel figure. If the kit ships as a fixed one- or two-panel product this is settled by the manufacturer, but read the instructions rather than assuming.

We do not know which circuit the socket you would use belongs to. The specification's method: switch off one circuit breaker at the consumer unit and see which sockets lose power. Sockets that go off together are on the same circuit. If your consumer unit is unlabelled or you are not confident doing this, the specification says to get a qualified electrician to advise rather than guess.

If you live in a flat or a block and do not know what the external walls are made of, or whether the building is in a remediation programme, the specification tells you to consult the building owner, freeholder, managing agent or other responsible person. That is the intended route — it is not a question you are expected to answer by looking.

This is guidance based on the published Interim Product Specification. It is not a legal determination, not an electrical inspection, and not a substitute for advice from a qualified electrician. It can only be as accurate as the answers you give it.
Expect a “fail” on the ENA register rule. As at 11 August 2026, no kit was verified on the ENA Type Test Register, so essentially every kit on sale today fails that rule. That is the market's position, not a fault in the checker — we would rather say so plainly than hide it. We track the register on our certified kits page.

These are the conditions a plug-in solar device must meet under IPS version 2, published on 16 July 2026. The checker above applies exactly this list — the table and the tool read from the same source, so they cannot drift apart. The professional-assessment row is the one advisory in the list; everything else is pass-or-fail.

The 2,000 W DC panel cap was retained from version 1 and is flagged as under review. The array limits come from clause 4.2.2, the 960 W advisory from clause 4.1, the prohibited surfaces from clause 5.8, and the socket-circuit and adaptor restrictions from clauses 8.3.3, 8.3.2 and 6.2.3.1.
The ENA register: why “registered” is not “verified”
The ENA Type Test Register is a database run by the Energy Networks Association, on its Connect Direct platform. It records generation equipment that has been type-tested against Engineering Recommendation G98 — the standard that governs small generators connecting to the distribution network. It is the mechanism the plug-in framework leans on to tell a compliant device from an uncertified one.
The wording matters. IPS version 1 asked for a device to be registered. Version 2 changed that to verified compliant, and the change was deliberate. Registration is a submission: a manufacturer supplies its own test evidence and the entry appears. Verification is that evidence being checked. A product page that says “ENA registered” is therefore quoting the weaker of the two, and it does not meet the register rule on its own.
There is a second trap worth knowing about. Many European balcony kits use microinverters — Hoymiles units, for instance — that already hold G98 type-test listings for the inverter. That is not the same as a listing for the complete kit: panels, inverter, cabling and UK plug assessed together. A seller can point at a genuine register entry for the inverter while the kit itself has never been verified.

Frequently asked questions
Is any plug-in solar kit compliant yet?
Not as far as we can establish. The ENA Type Test Register is the gate every kit has to pass, and as at 11 August 2026 it contained no verified plug-in solar kits at all. That means essentially every kit you can buy today will fail the ENA register rule in this checker. It is not a fault in the tool — it is where the market currently stands, and it should change once manufacturers put UK-specification kits through certification.
Does a Schuko-to-UK adapter make a kit compliant?
No, and this is the single most common misconception. The specification requires a BS 1363 plug fitted at the factory, non-rewireable, and fused by the manufacturer at 5 A or less. A travel adapter on a Schuko lead meets none of those conditions and introduces a connection the safety assessment never covered. A Schuko kit with an adapter is still a Schuko kit.
What is the difference between 'registered' and 'verified' on the ENA register?
Registration means a manufacturer has submitted a device to the ENA Type Test Register. Verification means the listing has been checked and confirmed as compliant. IPS version 2 tightened the wording specifically to require verification, because a registration on its own is only the manufacturer's own claim. A listing that says nothing more than 'registered' does not satisfy the rule.
Can I use a plug-in solar kit that has a battery?
Not through the plug-in route. Battery storage inside the device is excluded from the framework, so a battery-integrated kit cannot be self-installed on a plug. The product is not illegal and not unsafe — it simply needs a conventional installation by a qualified electrician instead.
How many plug-in solar devices can I have?
One, however many socket circuits you have. IPS version 2 does allow one device per household final ring circuit, replacing version 1's one-per-household rule — but the specification notes that GB network connection requirements apply as well, and that Engineering Recommendation G98 Issue 2 Amendment 1 2026 restricts this to one device per household "unless and until that is amended". Two limits apply at once and the tighter one wins, so the per-circuit allowance is not yet the operative rule. The "number of devices" rule in this checker applies the household limit for that reason.
My kit is under 2,000 W of panels. Can it still fail the array rules?
Yes, and this catches people out. The 2,000 W figure is a cap on total panel wattage, but the specification separately limits how the array is wired: up to 4 PV modules may be connected to the inverter, no more than 2 may be connected in series within any string, and the open-circuit voltage at the inverter inputs must not exceed 120 V DC. The reason given is that panels in series can produce harmful DC voltages at the inverter input, and that the risk of sustained DC arcing rises with DC voltage. A five-panel kit, or a four-in-series string, breaches the specification whatever the wattage adds up to.
Is a kit over 960 W of panels non-compliant?
No. This is an advisory, not a limit, and the checker treats it that way — it will never turn a compliant kit non-compliant. The specification says manufacturers "shall advise that consumers installing plug-in solar devices with a total PV module maximum power above 960W should consider professional assessment of their existing electrical installation prior to installation", and describes the threshold as a precautionary measure for larger arrays. What is mandatory is that the advice is given. The hard cap is more than twice this figure, at 2,000 W.
Can I run it from an extension lead, or off a lighting circuit?
Neither. The specification says plug-in solar devices "shall only be connected to socket circuits and not to circuits supplying lighting or other fixed equipment", giving a spur feeding an electric cooker or boiler as an example of what is not permitted alongside a lighting circuit. Separately, it does not permit multi-way adaptors, travel adaptors, RCD adaptors or plug convertors, and requires the plug itself to carry a warning that the device must not be connected to an extension cable, multi-way adaptor or RCD adaptor. The plug goes straight into a socket-outlet, or the kit is being used outside the rules.
Are there buildings where I cannot install one at all?
Yes, and it is a longer list than most people expect. The specification states that installations "shall not be permitted" on aluminium composite material (ACM) or metal composite material (MCM) cladding systems; on high pressure laminate (HPL) cladding systems; on timber cladding systems; on timber balconies; on buildings subject to external wall remediation works, building safety remediation works, or equivalent restrictions relating to external wall fire safety. These are fire-safety exclusions written as a prohibition rather than a caution, so no freeholder, managing agent or landlord can waive them. If you live in a block and do not know how the external walls are built, the specification tells you to consult the building owner, freeholder, managing agent or other responsible person before installing.
Does this checker give me a legal ruling?
No. It applies the published Interim Product Specification to the answers you give it. It is guidance, not a legal determination and not an electrical inspection. If a kit passes here, that reflects what you told us about it — it is not a certificate, and it does not replace advice from a qualified electrician.
Do I still need to notify my DNO?
Yes — it is mandatory. IPS version 2 requires a compliant product to carry a statement that notification to the Distribution Network Operator about connection and disconnection is mandatory, with a link to instructions, plus clear information on registration and deregistration obligations and a QR code directing you to the guidance and registration process. A compliant plug-in device does not remove the duty. What was still in development at the time of writing is the simplified registration pathway, not the obligation itself.
