On the high street
Argos
Argos sells six UKSOL bundles in a “Plug in solar” category. Four carry the register's model codes exactly; the two ground-mount kits carry shortened codes. The same category also lists EcoFlow's STREAM microinverter and STREAM batteries, whose own descriptions say they must be hard-wired by an electrician, so they aren't plug-in kits. Our UKSOL review covers the range.
Homebase
Homebase sells the same six UKSOL kits in a “Plug-In Solar Kits & Panels” category, delivered by the supplier. It uses its own model numbers rather than UKSOL's, so we matched them by name, wattage and mount. Homebase's own site search returned nothing for “solar” when we checked, even though the category exists.
City Plumbing
City Plumbing sells kits under its own name, a DMEGC panel or two with a Hoymiles HiFlow microinverter, from the cheapest verified kit we've found, plus two UKSOL ground kits. Some of its listings carry part numbers that match the register exactly and some don't, so check the part number before you order. Our City Plumbing review goes through each.
Screwfix
Screwfix sells one kit: a PowerXpress 800W kit with two 460W panels (code 396MG), at £669 when we checked, delivered by PowerXpress. The listing doesn't show a model code. Its contents match PowerXpress's only verified register record, which PowerXpress also sells direct. Screwfix is the only one of the government's seven named retailers we found selling a kit.
Online specialists and energy suppliers
Plug In Solar Ltd (pluginsolar.co.uk) lists Perlight PowerPlug MAX, Thunder Bolt and UKSOL kits with SKUs that are the register's own codes, which makes them the easiest listings to check. It also sells its own “Plug-In Solar” DIY kits that we didn't match to a verified record.
Octopus Energy sells one- and two-panel bundles, at launch prices of £450 and £650 including delivery when we checked. Its pages name a Fox ESS microinverter but no model; Octopus has one verified record and says its system has been deemed compliant. Its own pages gave different delivery estimates. Our Octopus report has the detail. British Gas has a register-your-interest page, and EDF and E.ON weren't selling kits.
Direct from the makers
Several makers sell direct: UKSOL, PatioSun, Thunder Energy, PowerXpress, Modular Solar and Solarfy. Thunder and Solarfy quote the register reference on their own product pages, and PowerXpress its registered model code. Solarfy was taking pre-orders with deliveries from 10 October. Thunder also sells flexible-panel and battery kits that aren't verified records, so pick the Bolt kits if you want the plug-in route.
Some verified kits weren't on sale anywhere we looked: Zendure's SolarFlow 800 kits, TSUNESS, APsystems, The Solar Centre (“coming soon”) and Segen (a trade wholesaler). Worldwide Solar's one kit was sold out and didn't match a verified record exactly.
Amazon
We found no kit sold by Amazon itself. Brand and third-party sellers list UKSOL kits (with no model code shown), Modular Solar's units and EcoFlow's STREAM kits. Be careful with references quoted on listings: EcoFlow's STREAM kit listing quotes an ENA record that is an ordinary inverter record, not a verified plug-in kit, and three unbranded 960 W kits quote an inverter record whose plug-in solar equivalent is Non-compliant. A reference on a listing only counts if it's a Compliant record under the register's Plug-in Solar type, which is what our tracker lists.
EcoFlow
Two EcoFlow kits were verified on 22 September, but EcoFlow UK's own kit page still said “DO NOT BUY FOR UK PLUG-IN SOLAR” when we checked, and we didn't find either verified kit on sale under its registered model. EcoFlow's STREAM batteries are sold widely, but they need an electrician; see our STREAM Ultra X review.
Where we found no plug-in kit
On 30 September 2026 we searched each of these retailers' own sites. Retailer search is unreliable, so read each as “we found none”, not proof that nothing is stocked:
- B&Q: Searches for plug in solar, balcony solar, solar panel kit, 800w solar and UKSOL found portable panels, lights and connectors. Two marketplace plug-and-play listings were out of stock with no delivery offered, and a bare Hoymiles microinverter is sold through the marketplace. Some searches returned errors.
- Wickes: Searches for plug in solar, solar panel, balcony solar and solar kit found only a 45 W EcoFlow USB-C panel; its solar inverter category was empty.
- Toolstation: Searches for plug in solar and solar panel found portable panels and solar lights; two further searches were blocked by a security check.
- Currys: Searches for plug in solar, solar panel, balcony solar and solar panel kit found portable panels, power stations and power banks (first page of each).
- Costco: Solar results were installed Fresh Solar systems and batteries, not plug-in kits.
- Lidl: Four searches returned no match. See our Lidl guide.
- Aldi: Three searches returned no result.
- Asda: The groceries site found no kit; George's search could not be run.
- Tesco: Searches found marketplace solar lights, chargers and portable panels.
- Sainsbury's: Searches found nothing and pointed to Argos.
- IKEA: Searches found solar LED lights only.
- John Lewis: Searches found solar lights, cameras and a solar radio.
- British Gas, EDF and E.ON: British Gas has a register-your-interest page; EDF and E.ON have explainers but no product.
The supermarkets are covered in more depth in our supermarket solar guide and our Lidl guide.
The government's named retailers
In June the government named Amazon, Asda, B&Q, Currys, Lidl, Screwfix and Wickes as retailers working with it on plug-in solar. By 30 September 2026, Screwfix was the only one we found selling a kit, and Amazon carried third-party listings. The chains actually selling verified kits, Argos, Homebase and City Plumbing, weren't on that list.
Before you buy, wherever you buy
- Match the model or reference on the listing to a verified record on our tracker.
- Plug it straight into a wall socket on a socket circuit, one kit per household for now.
- Notify your network operator under G98 after you switch it on; see our G98 guide.
- Not on wood. For the full picture, start with our guide to plug-in solar panels, and our 800W kits page lists every kit at the limit.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy a plug-in solar kit in the UK?
At our 30 September 2026 check, verified kits were sold on the high street by Argos, Homebase, City Plumbing, Screwfix, online by specialists such as Plug In Solar Ltd, by Octopus Energy, and direct from makers including UKSOL, PatioSun, Thunder Energy, PowerXpress, Modular Solar and Solarfy. We found none at B&Q, Wickes, Currys, Lidl or Aldi.
Does Screwfix sell plug-in solar?
Yes, one kit when we checked on 30 September 2026: a PowerXpress 800W kit with two 460W panels (Screwfix code 396MG), at £669 and delivered by PowerXpress. The listing shows no model code, but its contents match PowerXpress's only verified register record.
Does B&Q or Wickes sell plug-in solar kits?
We found none on 30 September 2026. B&Q had two marketplace plug-and-play listings, both out of stock with no delivery offered, and Wickes's solar panel category held only a 45 W USB-C panel. Both were named in the government's June announcement, but neither had a verified kit on sale.
Is it safe to buy plug-in solar on Amazon?
Check each listing. We found no kit sold by Amazon itself, only brand and third-party sellers. Some listings quote an ENA reference that turns out to be an ordinary inverter record rather than a verified plug-in solar kit, and one inverter model quoted that way is Non-compliant as a plug-in device. Match the reference against our certification tracker before buying.
Can I buy a kit from EcoFlow for UK plug-in solar?
Not from EcoFlow UK's own kit page when we checked: it said "DO NOT BUY FOR UK PLUG-IN SOLAR". Two EcoFlow kits are verified on the register, but we didn't find either on sale under its registered model.
