EcoFlow STREAM 5000 Review: What It Is, and Which UK Route It Can Actually Use

The EcoFlow STREAM 5000 is a 5,024 Wh home battery system with up to 5,000 W of solar input and 3,000 W of AC output. Because it contains a battery, it cannot use the UK plug-in solar route that opened on 27 August 2026. It needs a conventional installation instead.

What the STREAM 5000 Actually Is

Strip away the launch language and this is a floor-standing home battery with solar inputs built in. EcoFlow opened its pre-launch period on 15 June 2026, and its own UK product page puts the capacity at 5,024 Wh, the maximum solar input at 5,000 W and the maximum AC output at 3,000 W. It takes up to 12 solar panels. Stack expansion units alongside it and EcoFlow says the system reaches 90 kWh of storage, 18,000 W of output power and 30,000 W of solar input: home solar at a scale that has nothing to do with a balcony.

That is a different category of product from the thing most people mean by balcony solar.

A plug-in kit is two panels and a small inverter that pushes a few hundred watts into a socket. This is a whole-home energy system that happens to share a product name with EcoFlow’s balcony range. If you arrived here after reading about 800 W kits, the STREAM 5000 is not the next size up. It is a different decision, with an electrician attached to it.

Verified Specifications and the Ones EcoFlow Has Not Published

This is a desk review of manufacturer documentation, not a hands-on test or product certification. Specifications below were checked on 10 September 2026 against EcoFlow’s UK product page. The warranty policy sets the coverage and exclusions.

EcoFlow’s table gives 3,000 W off-grid and 800 W / 3,000 W grid-tied, but its detailed FAQ qualifies those figures: a single unit’s off-grid outlet is 2,500 W, rising to 3,000 W with an expansion battery. Grid-tied 3,000 W output also depends on the specified PV or battery configuration. Confirm the exact installation with EcoFlow; reducing output to 800 W does not remove the UK battery exclusion.

EcoFlow’s annual-generation estimate depends on the panel array, location and operating assumptions. It is not measured UK generation from our testing, and the battery’s storage capacity alone cannot predict annual solar yield.

The page distinguishes displayed prices from a lower deposit offer: £1,599 for STREAM 5000 (£1,499 through the offer), £1,499 for AC 5000 (£1,399 through the offer), and £1,999 for the four-panel bundle (£1,899 through the offer). On 10 September it stated that the balance-payment stage starts on 15 September and estimated shipping in the fourth week of October. Check the selected bundle and payable balance before ordering; a payment date is not a delivery date.

What we could not confirm

These points still need confirmation for an individual purchase or installation:

• Battery chemistry was not identified in the UK specification table we checked.
• The exact cable and connection design required for your UK installation: confirm with EcoFlow and your electrician.
• A guaranteed delivery date: the published October shipping window is an estimate.

The published dimensions, weight, cycle-life conditions, warranty and IP rating are now included above. An IP65 enclosure rating does not override the installation instructions or make every outdoor location suitable.

Why the Battery Is the Problem Under SI 2026 No. 848

From 27 August 2026, SI 2026 No. 848 makes it lawful in Great Britain to sell and use a plug-in solar device that meets the Interim Product Specification. The specification is narrow on purpose. Output is capped at 800 VA and 3.5 A, single phase. Panel capacity is capped at 2,000 W DC. The plug has to be a factory-fitted BS 1363 type with a 5 A fuse. And battery storage within the device is not permitted at all.

The battery excludes it from this route even if its grid-tied output is limited to 800 W. Its 3,000 W setting also exceeds the plug-in output cap.

This is where a lot of coverage goes wrong, so it is worth being precise. Being outside the plug-in route is not a safety finding and it is not a ban. It is a statement about which legal pathway a product has to take. A 5 kWh battery has always needed a conventional installation in the UK, and it still does. Nothing about SI 2026 No. 848 changed that either way.

The brand-level point is equally worth getting right. EcoFlow is not excluded from the plug-in route as a brand. Its panels-plus-microinverter device, the EF-PS-800, was published on the ENA Type Test Register’s Plug-in Solar type on 26 August 2026 and is assessed Non-compliant, which on this register means further information is required rather than that it failed. What Installing One Conventionally Involves

Three things, none of them optional.

An electrician must assess the connection, protection and siting against BS 7671 and the applicable building rules. Part P applies in England and Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own building requirements. EcoFlow’s UK page specifically says this battery system requires professional connection and must not feed power into a household socket.

The network route depends on type testing and the total generation or storage installation, not just the 3,000 W headline. G98 covers fully type-tested microgenerators up to 16 A per phase; the installer must confirm eligibility, including existing equipment. Larger or otherwise ineligible installations may need G99 approval before connection. In Northern Ireland use NIE Networks’ G98/NI or G99/NI process. See our DNO notification guide.

Allow space for a 295 × 298 × 489 mm, 45.4 kg base unit, plus the clearances and any expansion batteries required by the installation instructions. Agree the location and mounting with the installer.

STREAM 5000 vs the First-Generation STREAM Range

The naming is genuinely confusing, and EcoFlow has not made it easier.

The first-generation STREAM range is a balcony product line. The STREAM Microinverter is the plug-in unit at the bottom of it. The STREAM Ultra adds a 1.92 kWh battery across four MPPT channels, the STREAM Pro and STREAM Max sit alongside it at the same capacity with fewer channels, and the STREAM Ultra X carries 3.84 kWh. The new STREAM 5000 is the second generation and a different scale entirely, and it stacks, with an expansion battery 5000 unit alongside it rather than a bigger box.

If you already own EcoFlow portable power stations, an EcoFlow Delta or River, the STREAM 5000 does not replace them. It is a separate, fixed system.

The STREAM AC 5000 has its own EcoFlow UK product page. It stores the same 5,024 Wh but has no direct solar inputs. EcoFlow lists 295 × 287 × 489 mm, 44.6 kg, IP65 and a 10-year warranty. Compare the rest of the family in our STREAM model guide.

On route status, the position across the range is simple. Every model with a battery in it (Ultra, Ultra X, Pro, Max, AC Pro, STREAM AC 5000 and STREAM 5000) is outside the plug-in route. The STREAM Microinverter is the only one in the family with the right electrical shape for it, and its register entry (the EF-PS-800) is assessed Non-compliant.

The App, the Smart Meter and Tariff Control

The OASIS 3.0 energy management layer and Smart Tariff Management are the parts EcoFlow leads with, and for a UK buyer they are the parts that actually determine whether a system like this earns its keep.

The logic is straightforward. If you are on a time-of-use tariff, the system charges from the grid when the unit rate is low, holds it, and discharges into the house when the rate is high. Solar generation gets used first, so self-consumption stays high and surplus solar energy goes into storage rather than out to the grid for nothing. The EcoFlow Smart Meter Dual CT is what gives the system a live view of what the house is drawing, and without a smart meter reading the incoming supply, an energy management system is guessing. Solar utilisation is the number worth watching in the EcoFlow app, not peak output power.

EcoFlow publishes an optional Local Mode requiring a compatible smart meter. Its footnotes say AI functions, dynamic tariffs, solar forecasting, data statistics and firmware updates are unavailable offline. Confirm which functions your planned setup needs before buying.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Wait

It suits you if you own your home, have somewhere to install a floor-standing battery, are on a time-of-use tariff, and want storage sized for a whole house rather than a balcony. On those terms it is a reasonable-looking product and the expansion path is genuinely useful.

Wait if you are renting, or if you are in a flat and were looking at balcony solar because rooftop is not available to you. This is not that product. Moving it would require safe disconnection and a fresh installation assessment; it needs permission and an electrician.

And wait if the reason you are here is the 27 August 2026 date. Nothing about that date makes the STREAM 5000 easier to install, cheaper, or newly permitted. It was installable before and it is installable after, on exactly the same terms.
