Since 27 August 2026, plug-in solar has been lawful to sell and use in Great Britain under SI 2026 No. 848, but only for kits that have actually been verified against the government's product specification. This page tracks which kits have cleared that bar and where the ones on sale can be bought, so you can check before you buy. Register state is re-pulled from ENA Connect Direct on every update; the check date is in the badge above.
Every Record on the Register
One row per record under the Plug-in Solar Type, newest first. A verified kit with a live listing carries the retailer and the price it showed on the date given; prices move without notice, so treat them as a guide. Match the register reference to the box in front of you, because the kit is what is assessed, not the brand.
Under review is the ENA's “Non-compliant”: not yet deemed compliant, to be reviewed again. It is not a safety finding.

What “Approved” Actually Means
Under the rules in force since 27 August 2026, a compliant plug-in solar kit must tick every one of these boxes:
- Built to the final Interim Product Specification (version 2) , the technical rulebook DESNZ published on 16 July 2026, covering everything from the 800W-class output cap to fire performance and cable design. Our legalisation coverage explains what changed in the final version.
- Verified on the ENA Type Test Register. The device must be type-tested to Engineering Recommendation G98 and, crucially, assessed and identified as compliant on the register. The specification is explicit that registration alone is not enough, and 5 of the 52 records under the Plug-in Solar Type show why: they exist, and they are Non-compliant.
- Carrying a compliance declaration. Every kit must declare on the product that it complies with the specification, with labelling and a QR code linking to the registration process.
- A UK plug, factory-fitted. A non-rewireable moulded BS 1363 plug with a fuse of no more than 5A and partially insulated pins, not a Schuko plug with an adapter.
- No battery. The specification covers solar panels plus a grid-following microinverter only. Battery-integrated kits cannot use the plug-in route at all.
Anything that fails one of those tests is not a compliant plug-in solar device, whatever the listing says. The wiring side rests on BS 7671 Amendment 4 (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, published 15 April 2026), which the specification requires compliance with.
Non-compliant does not mean failed

Seven kits are verified, from the single-panel 460W and 515W Compact to the two-panel 1,260W Pro Max. A UK company selling its own panels with an 800W microinverter. |
| Perlight SolarPowerPlug MAX, FLEX+, FLEX and PowerPlug (12 kits) | VerifiedRegister 27 Aug 2026 | The biggest verified range by count: eight 800VA PowerPlug MAX and FLEX+ kits (465W to 1,000W) published 27 August 2026, and the four 500VA PowerPlug and FLEX kits that sat at Non-compliant from 31 August until revised /A1 records were assessed Compliant on 7 September. The FLEX+ 500, missing from the register on 7 September, is listed again. We have not found a consumer retailer listing any of them yet. |

The kit is what is assessed. On our 7 September search its website listed only the two UKSOL kits, none of its own. |
| hdm solarPSK1000 and PSK2000 | VerifiedRegister 2 Sept 2026 | Solar wholesaler with a consumer outlet. The PSK1000 was assessed Compliant on 2 September 2026 and the PSK2000 on 4 September. | EcoFlowEF-PS-800Our review | Registered onlyRegister 26 Aug 2026 | EcoFlow's plug-in device, the EF-PS-800, was published on 26 August 2026 and is assessed Non-compliant. The STREAM battery systems were never candidates for the plug-in route; they remain conventional-install products. Nothing from EcoFlow is verified. |
| HoymilesHF-800-WB and HMS-800-2WBOur review | Registered onlyRegister 3 Sept 2026 | Both bare microinverters are Non-compliant as devices. Kits built around them can still be verified in their own right: City Plumbing has eight Compliant kits built on the HF-800-WB and HMS-800-2WB. The two Plugsol kits built on the HMS-800-2WB, Non-compliant on 4 September, are no longer returned by the register at all. |

Its product pages give no register reference. The only Octopus device that was under the Plug-in Solar Type, the M1-800-E (Non-compliant, published 2 September), is no longer returned by the register on our 8 September check, so Octopus currently has no record under the Type at all, and no Fox ESS device appears under it either. |

| Retailer own-brands (Lidl, Aldi, B&Q, Screwfix, Wickes) | Not yet verified | None of the seven retailers named by DESNZ has an own-brand kit on the register, and on our check we found no verified kit ranged by Lidl, Aldi, B&Q, Screwfix, Wickes or Toolstation. Argos, which was not on the government list, is. |
Who Is Selling, and Who Isn't Yet
The retail picture is not the one the June announcement suggested. DESNZ named Amazon, Asda, B&Q, Currys, Lidl, Screwfix and Wickes as the retailers working with it on plug-in solar. On our 8 September 2026 check we found no verified kit on sale at any of the supermarkets or DIY chains; the only one of the seven with a verified kit listed was Amazon, through a third-party brand. The retailer with the widest range is Argos, which was never on the list: six UKSOL bundles from £599, with City Plumbing stocking two of the same kits for the trade and anyone else. The rest of the market is direct: PatioSun, Thunder Energy and Modular Solar sell their own kits, and Perlight, InstaGroup, hdm solar, APsystems, Skyworth, PowerXpress and The Impact Crowd have verified kits with no consumer listing we could find yet. City Plumbing's own eight verified kits were not on its website on our 7 September search either.
One listing needs its own warning. Octopus Energy has sold one- and two-panel plug-in bundles at £450 and £650 since 28 August, for delivery at the end of September. Its product pages give no register reference, the one Octopus device that was under the Plug-in Solar Type (Non-compliant on 2 September) is no longer returned on our 8 September check, and no Fox ESS device, the microinverter Octopus names, is listed under that Type at all. Until a Compliant reference appears, treat it as unverified; our Octopus report has the detail.
Two things follow. First, the cheapest verified kit today is £449, above the £400 to £600 range DESNZ modelled, and a long way above the sub-£300 Amazon kits that are not on the register at all. Second, the big-brand names most readers arrive searching for, EcoFlow and Anker, have nothing verified: EcoFlow's EF-PS-800 is Non-compliant and Anker's plug-in record has dropped out of the filter. Their battery systems remain conventional-install products, and our kit roundup treats them that way. Anker's new Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro is the clearest example: Anker itself says it must be hardwired by an electrician in the UK.
How to Check the Register Yourself
The authoritative source is the ENA's Connect Direct Type Test Register, the industry database of grid-connection approved equipment. Search it and filter the device Type to “Plug-in Solar”. If a kit you are considering is not there, it has not demonstrated compliance, full stop. Compliant products also carry the specification declaration and a QR code on the label, which gives you a quick in-store check: no declaration, no purchase. Match the model code on the box to the register record, because several brands have both Compliant and Non-compliant kits under the same product name.
What You Can and Can't Do Now
The practical version of the specification, for anyone buying one of the kits above:
- You can plug one compliant kit into a normal wall socket on a standard socket circuit. The specification permits one device per household final ring circuit, but Engineering Recommendation G98 Issue 2 Amendment 1 2026 restricts connections to 1 device per household unless and until it is amended, so one kit is the limit today, however many circuits you have.
- You can connect up to 2,000W of solar panels to the kit's microinverter, which caps output at 800VA (3.5A).
- You can install it yourself as a renter or flat-dweller, no electrician required for a compliant kit, though landlord or freeholder permission is a separate question.
- You must still notify your distribution network operator under G98. Our G98 guide explains the process, and the kit's QR code will point you to it.
- You can't use an extension lead, multi-way adaptor, or a lighting or cooker circuit: wall socket only.
- You can't plug in a battery-integrated kit. No kit with battery storage qualifies under this route.
- You can't treat an unverified kit as compliant. If it is not on the register, the plug-in route does not apply to it, and the older kits still on Amazon need an electrician and a G98 notification like any other small solar system.
- You can't mount it on timber. Timber cladding and timber balconies are barred by the specification and, separately, by planning law (SI 2026 No. 896).
- You shouldn't assume old wiring is fine: homes with older fuse boards or legacy RCDs should get an electrician to check before connecting any generation device. See our electrical safety guide.
One scope note: the plug approval rules are UK-wide, but the electricity safety regulations that make use lawful apply in Great Britain. If you are in Northern Ireland, the position is different: see our Northern Ireland guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is plug-in solar now legal in the UK?
Yes, in Great Britain, since 27 August 2026. SI 2026 No. 848 makes it lawful to sell and use a plug-in solar device that meets the Interim Product Specification and is verified as compliant on the ENA Type Test Register. A kit that is not on the register is not covered, whatever the listing says. The use permission does not extend to Northern Ireland.
Can I buy a verified plug-in solar kit in the UK today?
Yes. As at 8 September 2026, 47 kits were assessed Compliant on the register and we have found live retail listings for 13 of them, from £449. Argos ranges six UKSOL bundles, City Plumbing stocks two of them, Modular Solar sells through Amazon, and PatioSun and Thunder Energy sell direct. Amazon look-alike kits that are not on the register are not covered by the plug-in route.
Are plug-in solar panels safe?
The government's own electrical safety study found nothing intrinsically unsafe about the German-market devices it tested on UK ring circuits, within defined limits. The specification turns those limits into product requirements: 800VA output, anti-islanding, a 5A fused UK plug, residual DC current caps and RCD compatibility. The safety controls sit in the product, which is exactly why buying a verified kit matters.
Which retailers sell approved kits?
On our 8 September 2026 check: PatioSun (direct), Amazon UK, Thunder Energy (direct), Argos, City Plumbing. Of the seven retailers DESNZ named in June, only Amazon had a verified kit listed, and that is a third-party brand rather than an Amazon range. Argos, which was not on the government's list, has the widest choice. We found nothing verified on sale at Lidl, Aldi, B&Q, Screwfix, Wickes, Currys or Asda.
Can I claim the Smart Export Guarantee on a plug-in kit?
Realistically no. Every SEG tariff needs certification paperwork that a self-installed plug-in kit will not have: MCS for most suppliers, or for Octopus an Electrical Installation Certificate plus a DNO acceptance letter. An 800VA device exports very little in any case. A plug-in kit's economics rest on self-consumption, not export payments.
