Hoymiles HMS-800W-2T Review: The 800 VA Numbers, and What They Mean in the UK

The Hoymiles HMS-800W-2T is a dual-MPPT microinverter rated at 800VA and 3.48 A, with built-in Wi-Fi and an IP67 enclosure. It sits just under the UK plug-in route’s 800 VA and 3.5A limits, but no Hoymiles device is listed under the ENA register’s Plug-in Solar type.

Can the HMS-800W-2T use the plug-in route?

Not as things stand on 11 August 2026, though the electrical shape is right. There is no battery inside it, and at 800VA and 3.48 A it sits just under the plug-in route’s limits of 800 VA and 3.5 A. What stops it is the register — and the detail there is sharper than a bare absence. Hoymiles Power Electronics Inc. holds around ten entries on the ENA Type Test Register, most of them Compliant, published on 4 August 2026: the HiOne three-phase PV inverters and the AiOne energy storage devices. What it has under the register’s Plug-in Solar type is nothing at all. The four devices listed there come from InstaGroup, Anker and GoodWe, and all four are marked Non-compliant — and only twoof them are currently returned by the register’s own device-type filter. So this is not a manufacturer that struggles with the register. It is a manufacturer that has not put an 800 VA plug-in device through it. A verified Plug-in Solar listing is a precondition from 27 August 2026. None of that makes the inverter unsafe or unsuitable. It is a widely deployed European product. Hoymiles publishes this as a series datasheet covering the HMS-600W through HMS-1000W-2T, reached through a download-centre wrapper page that does not render for search engines — which is why nobody quotes the full table. Here is the HMS-800W-2T column.

Two omissions worth flagging. The datasheet states no warranty term — retailers commonly advertise 12 years, but that is their figure, not Hoymiles’. And it gives no European weighted efficiency, though the HiFlow datasheet does.

The built-in Wi-Fi is the practical upgrade over the older units. Hoymiles states “Built-in Wi-Fi” for this series without spelling out that a DTU becomes unnecessary — it says that explicitly only on the HiFlow datasheet — but that is what a built-in radio means in practice. How It Reads Against the UK Plug-In Limits

Rated output current is 3.48 A. The ceiling is 3.5 A. The 800 W class was designed against this limit, not squeezed under it by accident, and there is 0.02 A in hand. Maximum output is 800 VA and it will hold that all the way to the cap.

Maximum input voltage is 65 V, comfortably inside the 120 V DC open-circuit cap. But it cuts the other way on array design: IPS v2 allows up to four modules with two in series, and two modern 320–540 W panels in series will exceed 65 V on most panels. Two MPPTs with one input each makes this a two-panel, parallel product. The series allowance is not usable here.

The plug is the point that needs checking per SKU rather than assuming across the family.

Hoymiles’ datasheet specifies the optional Flex-S3 plug-and-play cable with a Schuko plug. UK retailers do sell 800VA Hoymiles hardware described as connecting to “a standard UK 13A plug socket”, and the HiFlow HF-800-WB is documented with a BS 1363-1 plug and a BS 1362 5 A fuse on InstaGroup’s UK datasheet — but those are different SKUs, and the naming is a genuine mess. We found one UK retailer selling under an HMS-800W-2T URL while describing a 2WB unit in the body copy.

What none of it establishes is what IPS v2 actually requires: a factory-fitted BS 1363 plug with a 5 A fuse and partially insulated pins. A UK 3-pin cable is not automatically that, and extension leads, multi-way adaptors, RCD adaptors and travel adaptors are all prohibited, so an adapter is not a workaround.

One more thing the compliance list tells you: German, European and French grid codes, and no UK one. No G98, no G99.

HMS-800W-2T vs the 600 VA Hoymiles Microinverters

The 600 VA units — including the HM-600 and HMS-600-2T covered in our existing review — are the same architecture at a lower rating. Going to 800 VA raises maximum input voltage from 60 V to 65 V, input current from 2 × 12 A to 2 × 14 A, panel compatibility from 240–405+ W to 320–540+ W, and rated output current from 2.61 A to 3.48 A.

For a UK buyer the 800 VA rating is the one that matters, because it matches the cap. A 600 VA unit leaves 200 VA of the allowance unused.

Buying from a German retailer

Two of the shops that rank for this model in the UK are German, and the price is often better. If you go that way, the listing will be in German and the spec table will not look like the one above.

The vocabulary is worth having. Wechselrichter is inverter. Leistung is power output. Wirkungsgrad is efficiency — the figure to compare is Spitzenwirkungsgrad, peak efficiency, at 96.70% here. Speicher is storage, so a listing offering the inverter mit Speicher is bundling a battery, which takes the whole thing outside the plug-in route. Sicherheit is safety. Vorteile is the benefits list. And if a listing describes the unit as the Nachfolger of the HM-800, it means successor — that is the generational point made above.

The catch is the plug. German stock ships to German sockets, and a Schuko unit with a UK adaptor is not a route to compliance here.

Be careful with names too. The HMS-800W-2T is not the 800-2WB, which Hoymiles sells in its HiFlow Pro 2-in-1 range, and neither is the HF-800-WB. Three distinct products, and retailers conflate them routinely — you will see “HMS-800-2WB” on listings, which is retailer shorthand rather than a Hoymiles model string. The 2WB and HiFlow units carry built-in WiFi and Bluetooth and a different cable arrangement. Check the exact string on the listing before you buy. What the HMS-800W-2T Would Suit on a UK Balcony

2 panels, one orientation, a household with daytime base load. That is the shape this micro-inverter fits, and it fits it well — silent, weatherproof, efficient at low light thanks to the 22 V start voltage, and monitored without extra hardware.

Both MPP trackers work independently — one MPP-tracker per panel — so one shaded solar panel does not drag the other down. On a balcony with railings, a neighbouring building or a roof overhang, that matters more than the headline maximum output does. Below roughly 400 W of solar panels you are paying for capacity you will never use; two 400–500 W modules is the sensible pairing for the full 800 W.

What it will not do is make a north-facing flat worth panelling. Through the shortest daylight hours of the year, expect very little from it at all — solar power in Britain in December is a rounding error, whatever the inverter.

We are not putting a payback figure on this page. There is no verified current UK price to base one on, and the retailer projections circulating for solar systems in this class — twenty-year cumulative tables built on assumed electricity inflation — are not something we would plan around.
