Plug-in solar becomes lawful to sell and use in Great Britain on 27 August 2026, under SI 2026 No. 848. A household may connect one compliant device. Notifying your network operator is mandatory. The reported government savings estimate is £70 to £110 a year, and a balcony sits at the bottom of that.
Sold across Europe as plug-and-play solar, a small solar kit like this is one or two panels, a microinverter and a lead into a socket. Below are 35 questions UK households ask, each answered in a paragraph and each linking to the page that answers it in full. Starting cold, the beginner’s guide is the better first read.
Nothing has been verified compliant yet
Compliance turns on an IPS declaration on the product plus an ENA Type Test Register listing assessed compliant. At our last check on 11 August 2026 four devices sat under the plug-in solar device type, all assessed Non-compliant. That’s a holding status rather than a refusal, and each gets reviewed again. It does mean there’s no compliant plug-in solar kit to recommend yet.
The Law, and What Changes in August 2026
The dates and the geography are where most coverage of UK plug-in solar goes wrong.
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
From 27 August 2026 a compliant device can lawfully be sold and used in Great Britain, under SI 2026 No. 848. There’s no lawful route before that date. Compliant is a narrow test rather than a general one, and our main guide to the legal position sets out what it covers.
What actually changes on 27 August 2026?
Two limbs of one instrument. Regulation 2 lets a notified body approve a UK plug for a generating device, which BS 1363 previously ruled out. Regulation 3 makes it legal to use plug-in solar in parallel with the network. The before-and-after is set out in full, alongside the dates that got us here.
Does the new law cover Northern Ireland?
Not the part that matters most. Regulation 1(4) says regulation 3, the limb that makes use lawful, extends to England and Wales and Scotland. The plug approval limb in regulation 2 does reach NI. The Northern Ireland position turns on the NI regulations being amended, and that’s an Executive matter.
How many plug-in solar devices can one home connect?
One. The specification permits one device per final ring circuit, but its own note records that G98 Issue 2 Amendment 1 2026 restricts connections to one per household unless and until that’s amended. Two limits apply and the tighter one wins, which is the rule most buyers miss.
Is plug-in solar safe?
An independent DESNZ-commissioned study concluded that plug-in solar is safe on UK domestic wiring where minimum product standards are met, and the specification sets those standards. The risks that remain sit in older wiring, improvised mounting and non-compliant products, which is what our electrical safety guide works through.
Buying a Kit, and Checking It
Nothing has cleared the register yet, so these answers are about how to check plug-in systems, not which to buy.
Can I buy a compliant kit yet?
Not at our last check. On 11 August 2026 the ENA Type Test Register carried four devices under the plug-in solar device type, from GoodWe, Anker and InstaGroup, all assessed Non-compliant. What the register shows is tracked separately from our certification tracker for solar kits.
How do I check a solar panel kit is legal before I buy it?
Three gates. An IPS compliance declaration on the product, an ENA listing assessed compliant, and the numbers: 800 VA AC output, 3.5 A, up to 2,000 W of DC solar panels, a BS 1363 plug with a 5 A fuse. A CE or UKCA mark isn’t the test for plug-in solar products. Run a kit through the checker, or do the same check by hand.
Can I use a German balcony solar kit in the UK?
Not as it comes. A Balkonkraftwerk ships with a Schuko plug rather than a BS 1363 one, adaptors and plug convertors are prohibited outright, and DIN VDE conformity doesn’t substitute for an ENA listing. Importing a German kit covers the plug, the register and VAT.
I’ve already bought a kit. What should I do?
Don’t connect it to your household circuits, and don’t scrap it either. Check the manufacturer and model against the ENA register, and keep the paperwork. The options for a kit you already own include off-grid use and conventional installation.
Permissions, Paperwork and Who You Have to Tell
Two notifications get confused constantly, and only one is compulsory.
Do I need an electrician to fit plug-in solar?
Not for the connection. You can plug in solar panels yourself, because a compliant device in an existing socket isn’t notifiable work under Part P. When you do need a registered electrician is a short list: a new socket, a new circuit, consumer unit work, or a bathroom zone. The wider building regulations picture sits alongside it.
Do I have to notify my distribution network operator?
Yes, and this is the compulsory one. The specification requires the product itself to say so and to carry a QR code to the registration guidance. Notifying your operator means G98 Form B after commissioning, and the form is short. The simplified route is still in development.
Who is my distribution network operator?
Geography decides it, and the first two digits of the MPAN on your bill confirm it. Six operators cover Great Britain: UK Power Networks, National Grid, Northern Powergrid, Electricity North West, SP Energy Networks and SSEN. What a network operator actually does explains why it needs telling.
Do I need to tell my electricity supplier?
We looked for a duty and didn’t find one. Your bill falls anyway, because a unit you generate and use is a unit you don’t buy from the grid. Telling them matters only if you want paying for exported units. The supplier and network operator split sets out what each is for.
Do I need planning permission for a balcony panel?
You can install rooftop panels on a house under long-established permitted development rights. Whether you can install solar panels on a railing or an external wall isn’t settled, and the DESNZ-commissioned safety study calls that position currently unclear. Conservation areas and listed buildings are separate questions. Our planning page says which parts are certain.
Who has to give me permission in a flat?
Compliant products must carry a statement that the user is responsible for getting permission from the owner, landlord, freeholder, managing agent or relevant authority. Whether your lease requires it turns on its alterations covenant and whether the railing is demised to you. Approaching a managing agent is its own exercise.
Can my landlord say no?
Yes. Consent is contractual, and most tenancies restrict alterations. A plug-in kit is an easier request than most, because nothing gets wired in, which is what our page on asking a landlord is built around. Council and housing association tenants go through a different process.
What an 800W Plug-In Solar Panel Actually Produces
Rated power and delivered power sit further apart here than on traditional rooftop solar panels. How a plug-in solar system works is the starting point.
Is 800 VA the same as 800 W?
No. VA is apparent power, which is what the cable, plug and fuse have to carry. W is real power, the part that does useful work. They’re equal only at a power factor of 1. SI 2026 No. 848 says 800 watts and the specification says 800 VA, and neither document reconciles the two.
What can an 800W plug-in device run?
In daylight: a broadband router, a laptop, a television, a set-top box and a fridge’s average draw. Not a kettle. Modelled on a vertical south-facing Manchester railing, the array’s best hour in five years averaged 653 W and the median daylight hour 67 W. The appliance-by-appliance table has the rest.
How much will a balcony kit generate where I live?
Modelled in PVGIS, 0.8 kWp mounted vertically and facing south makes roughly 480 to 660 kWh a year across the UK, Brighton highest and Inverness lowest in 21 cities. Orientation moves the figure more than geography does. Our savings calculator runs the same estimate against your tariff.
Which direction should the solar panels face?
South, if you get the choice. On a vertical mount east and west come out at roughly two thirds of south, and west delivers into the late afternoon when the flat is occupied. The full compass is worth reading, and north deserves its own answer.
How much output does shade cost?
More than the shaded area suggests. Cells are wired in series, so the least-lit one limits the current, and bypass diodes isolate whole sub-strings at a time. Expect a step change, not a taper. What shade costs and how the microinverter brands differ both matter on a railing.
Does a balcony kit generate anything in winter?
Yes, and a vertical mount gives up less of its year than a roof pitch, because the low midday sun strikes a vertical surface almost head-on in December. Solar generation is still small in absolute terms, at under a kilowatt-hour on a modelled December day. Our winter guide has the monthly figures.
Cost, Savings and Getting Paid
Generating solar power isn’t the same as saving money, and export isn’t income unless somebody has agreed to pay for it.
How much will plug-in solar save a year?
The UK government’s reported estimate is £70 to £110. Read the bottom of that range for a balcony, because the upper figure models a 30 degree south-facing installation rather than a near-vertical railing. The savings arithmetic turns on how much you use as it’s generated.
How much does a plug-in solar device cost?
DESNZ’s final-stage impact assessment gives an expected retail range of £400 to £600 per kit, with a modelling mean of £500. Nothing compliant had gone on sale when we wrote this, so there’s no shelf price to test it against. Where retail has got to and what the components cost sit separately.
Can I get paid for the electricity I export?
Only through an export tariff, and only if you meet a licensee’s criteria. For solar PV the Smart Export Guarantee wants a certified solar installation and installer, a meter capable of half-hourly measurement, and an export MPAN. Surplus solar energy without that earns nothing. How the scheme works and what each licensee pays are different questions.
Do I need MCS to get an export tariff?
Not universally. Ofgem asks that the installation and installer are suitably certified and accepts equivalent schemes, and at least one licensee publishes a documented route without an MCS certificate, with its own paperwork and a fee. Octopus is that licensee. Every route still wants an installer, which DIY solar kits haven’t got.
Can I add a battery to a plug-in solar device?
Plug-in batteries sit outside the route, and the exclusion is statutory rather than a clause in the specification. Limb (e) of the plug-in microgenerator definition in SI 2026 No. 848 rules out a device designed to import from the installation to store energy for later supply. A battery system, or solar panels and a battery together, needs the conventional route.
Your Building and Your Tenure
Balcony solar systems are decided by the building as much as by you. With no balcony at all, the wider options for flats is the better starting page.
Are there buildings where installation is banned outright?
Yes. Clause 5.8 prohibits installation on ACM and MCM cladding systems, HPL cladding, timber cladding, timber balconies, and buildings under external wall remediation. It’s written as a prohibition and names nobody who can grant an exception, so a freeholder has nothing to waive.
Can renters install plug-in solar?
Subject to consent, yes, and renters are the group the route was written for. Plug-in panels aren’t a fixture, so they stay your property and leave with you. Free solar offers won’t help, since they turn on a long lease of a roof. The renters’ guide covers the sequence, and a Juliet balcony narrows the mounting options.
What about a student house or an HMO?
The one-device limit bites hardest here. Six students sharing one supply are one household for G98, so the house gets one device between everyone. Purpose-built accommodation often fails clause 5.8 on the building. Student housing and HMOs covers licence conditions and shared circuits too.
Living With a Plug-In Solar System
The questions that arrive once the kit reaches a UK home.
Does plug-in solar work in a power cut?
No. Anti-islanding protection disconnects the inverter from the mains within 100 milliseconds of losing it, and the specification requires the voltage at accessible plug pins to fall below 34 V in that window. That protects anyone working on the network. For backup, a portable power station is the product, and other reasons output stops are usually simpler.
Do the solar panels need cleaning, and how long do they last?
Solar panels in the UK get rinsed by rain, and a near-vertical panel sheds water quickly, so clean only when you can see something on the glass. Panels are warranted for output over 25 to 30 years. The microinverter runs the shorter clock, at 10 to 12 years on published product warranties.
Will a balcony solar panel survive a UK storm?
That depends on the mounting more than the panel. The specification makes manufacturers prove the mounting by structural analysis to BS EN 1991-1-4, rules out cable ties and straps as the sole fixing, and publish a maximum installation height. Can I take the kit with me when I move?
Yes, since it isn’t a fixture. Tell the old network operator it’s decommissioned using Form D, notify the operator at the new address once it’s running, and check what your tenancy said about reinstatement. Moving with a plug-in kit has the order, and the EPC question comes up on sale.
Do I need to tell my home insurer?
Ask, and get the answer in writing. Insurers treat solar differently, and there’s no claims history for compliant plug-in devices yet. Under the Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012 a careless misrepresentation reduces a payout rather than voiding cover. What insurers ask and what happens after damage are worth reading first.
Where the honest answer is still "we don’t know"
Three answers above are unresolved rather than settled. Whether a plug-in device counts towards an EPC. Whether railing and external-wall mounting falls inside permitted development. And whether the instrument’s 800 watts or the specification’s 800 VA is the figure a manufacturer must declare.
